With more businesses incorporating work from home strategies for their teams due to COVID-19, now more than ever it’s essential to have a backup solution for your endpoints (workstations, laptops, devices). This is important even if you’re already backing up your server.
If anything unexpected were to happen to your business’ data, it could have a significant impact on your employees, your clients, and your business.
Why is a backup solution important?
Consider this: an employee has been working from home for the past few weeks. They are using their personal laptop/computer, or brought their work machine home, and this machine is not being backed up. What would happen if its hard drive were to suddenly fail? What would happen to the documents they were working on, or their emails and contacts (if they were being stored locally)?
We have seen this happen too many times over the last 14 years in business. Nobody thinks it will happen to them until it does!
“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
– Benjamin Franklin
It doesn’t matter how many employees you have or what industry you operate in, every business should have a backup solution in place, especially if employees are working from home. To prevent data loss from the unexpected, here are some best practices to consider when thinking about your backup strategy.
First of all, actually have a backup plan.
It sounds simple, but often businesses aren’t doing this until it is too late! There are multiple ways that a business can lose their data, including cyber-attacks and natural disasters. In fact, the leading cause of business data loss is human error. People delete stuff, open phishing emails, accidentally download malware, and more.
What plan do you have in place to ensure that you have up-to-date copies of all important data? Equally important is planning how you would you retrieve any lost data, and whose responsibility would it be.
Make it automated.
When thinking about a backup strategy you have to consider how data and files are going to get to their backup destination. The days of your employees having to stop and save their work are over. Our solution backs up your files automatically and silently as often as every 15 minutes. This protects from human error and assures that files and data are being backed up on a regular basis.
Back up data from endpoints.
Employees typically spend most of their time doing work on their desktop or laptop. They tend to move them into a central file destination only once they finish working on their files or they’re ready to share. If your backup plan does not backup data starting at the employee device level, you run the risk of losing all those “work in progress” files.
Keep at least one backup offsite.
We use the “rule of three” when it comes to backups. This means that there are three copies of the data, with at least one of them stored offsite. This is so that if the primary site is damaged (for example a fire at the office), your data remains safe and secure. Our data centres are located in Canada, so there is no need to worry about your data leaving the country.
